Scott Township / Clark High School

Clark High School, located at 1100 Washington Avenue in Carnegie, opened on October 3, 1935 to its first class of students in grades 9 - 12. While we’re unable to definitively confirm this, it’s likely that the governing authority and commissioner was the Scott Township School Board. When it opened, the building had 35 rooms across three stories, plus a two-story gymnasium.

Renamed in 1940 to Scott High School, the building adds seventh and eighth grade to its existing student body. Although the school was renamed, the engraving above the main entrance would continue to read “Clark High School” until it was permanently closed several iterations later.

Scott Township schools, which included the Scott High School, joined the Chartiers Valley Joint Schools in 1956 as a jointure. When it joined, Scott Township retained its own independent school board that managed its existing schools and elected individuals from the board to the joint board.

In 1960, an addition was built which included an expanded and dedicated one-story cafeteria within the new wing.

For the 1960 - 1961 school year, Scott Township High School sends its tenth through twelfth graders to the new Chartiers Valley Joint Senior High School. With grades 10 - 12 at the new joint senior high school, Scott High School is renamed John Dewey Junior High School, housing grades 7 - 9. The same building was retained and used for educating these grades.
